Debt payoff Sankey template
This is one year of debt payoff drawn as a Sankey diagram. Each starting balance enters its loan, interest arrives on top, and the year's payments leave as principal paid, interest paid, or the balance that remains.
It is the shape of the payoff posts people share: the smallest loan gone, the others shrinking, and the interest bill visible instead of buried in an amortisation table.

Making it with your own numbers
- 1
List every loan's starting balance
One line per loan: starting debt, the amount, the loan's name. The loan names become the columns of the diagram, so name them the way you say them.
- 2
Split the year's payments into principal and interest
Your statements already make the split. One line per movement: the loan, the amount, principal paid, interest paid or remaining balance.
- 3
Let the payoff show, then export
A paid-off loan has no remaining balance line — the node simply ends at principal and interest. Square suits an image post; deck suits a document.
The studio opens on this diagram, with the numbers in the panel beside it. Select all, paste yours over them.
Questions
- How do I make a Sankey diagram of my debt payoff?
- Flow each starting balance into its loan, add interest accrued on top, then flow out principal paid, interest paid and remaining balance per loan. Paste the lines into the studio — the template opens with a year already drawn.
- Why does interest arrive as an input?
- Because the loan node pays out more than its starting balance: the year adds interest and the payments remove principal. Showing interest arriving keeps the arithmetic honest and makes the interest bill a ribbon you can see.
- Is it free to make and download?
