Headcount Sankey template

This is a quarter of headcount movement drawn as a Sankey diagram. Hires enter, leavers exit, and closing headcount is what carried over.

It works because the flows are people, not money. The same diagram reads for a company of 90 or a department of 12.

Free to build and style. No account until you save.

The numbers that drew it

  • Opening headcount [84] Team

  • Support hires [4] Team
  • Team [7] Resignations
  • Team [4] Ends of contract
  • Team [92] Closing headcount

Making it with your own numbers

  1. 1

Put the period's opening number first

Opening headcount flows into the team, the same way hires do. Nothing else makes the arithmetic visible.

  2. 2

Split hires and leavers the way you report them

By team, by seniority, or by reason for leaving. One line each, and the diagram groups them for you.

  3. 3

    Keep values plain

People are counted, not priced. The value format control has a plain setting, so no currency symbol appears.

Questions

Can I use this for a hiring plan instead?
Yes. Flow open roles into teams instead of flowing hires in. The shape is the same and the labels change.
Does it work for attrition by reason?
Yes. Give each reason its own target node: resignation, end of contract, restructure. The widths compare them directly.
Will the diagram look the same next quarter?
Yes, if it is saved. Re-running keeps node order, theme and export size, and stores the old quarter as a snapshot.
